Independent climate and water expertise for infrastructure, adaptation and investment decisions.

Portrait of Dr Myra Naik, climate scientist
Welcome to my work

I am a climate risk, water resources and resilience specialist working at the intersection of climate science, infrastructure, finance and policy.

My work translates complex climate and water risk into practical decisions about infrastructure, adaptation, investment and water security — for governments, development partners, infrastructure organisations and private-sector clients across Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the United States.

The value of climate science lies in enabling better decisions for people and places.

Areas of expertise

Areas of research

  • Current

    Climate information and decision-making

My current research at the University of Cape Town examines how climate information is translated and applied in transboundary water-resource planning, infrastructure development and operations, adaptation and investment decisions across Southern Africa. Through WISER Africa CLICK, I map decision systems and information flows, identify the barriers between climate evidence and action, and co-develop a bounded intervention designed to produce observable change in a real decision pathway.

  • Theme

    Water security and water risk

My research examines drought, water availability and water risk across river basins, shared groundwater systems and bulk-water infrastructure. I am particularly interested in how climate variability and change affect system reliability, operating decisions and long-term resilience, and how water-related risks are managed across institutional and national boundaries.

  • Theme

    Adaptation and climate resilience

I explore how institutions respond to climate risk and uncertainty—and why technically credible information does not always lead to action. My interests include adaptation, climate services, institutional coordination and co-production approaches that translate climate knowledge into practical changes in policy, planning and implementation.

  • Emerging

    Climate risk, infrastructure and investment

An emerging area of my research examines how climate and environmental risk influence infrastructure planning, adaptation and investment decisions. I am particularly interested in how evidence on system reliability, costs, resilience and uncertainty is incorporated into feasibility, financing and public or development-finance decision processes.

  • Foundation

PhD research: climate change, land-use change and drought risk

My PhD research investigated future drought and water risk in the Western Cape, South Africa, focusing on interactions between climate change, land-use change, and water availability. Using regional climate model simulations and hydrological modelling, I examined projected changes in drought characteristics and the potential role of land-use interventions in mitigating future impacts on water resources.
